Lang, (William) Cosmo Gordon

Lang, (William) Cosmo Gordon
(1864–1945)
   Archbishop.
Lang was born of Presbyterian parents in Scotland and was educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford. In 1890 he was ordained a priest in the Church of England. He had a highly successful career and after serving as a parish priest, he was consecrated Bishop of Stepney in 1901, Archbishop of York in 1908 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1928. Today he is mainly remembered for his role in the abdication crisis of 1936. In fact he was not in consultation with Edward VIII and had little to do with the final decision. It was when Edward finally announced that he would abdicate the throne rather than give up the twice-divorced Mrs Simpson, that the Archbishop made an unfortunate broadcast to the nation. This elicited the memorable lines: ‘My Lord Archbishop, what a scold you are!/And when your man is down, how bold you are!/Of Christian charity how scant you are!/ And, auld Lang swine, how full of Cantuar!’
